- The Central Mining Institute is a National Research Institute of the A category
- It has a modern research infrastructure, including 4 research centres: The Clean Coal Technology Centre, Silesian Centre for Environmental Radioactivity and the Environmental Engineering Centre and Research Centre for Renewable Energy Sources and Climate
- The Institute has the status of a Notified Authority in the field of four directives of the European Union and the authorities of the certification body under the IECEx scheme
- It has implemented the Integrated Management System (quality, health and safety and the environment)
- The Institute has full permissions to grant academic degrees of the doctor of technical sciences and a doctor habilitatus of technical sciences in the following disciplines: mining and engineering geology - since 1961, environment engineering - since 1998.
