4th regional thematic workshops of project LINDANET

The fourth regional thematic workshops as part of project LINDANET took place on October 22, 2021. This time, the participants were invited to Jaworzno, where the old hazardous waste storage grounds of the Organika-Azot chemical plant can be found. Pesticides were produced in Jaworzno for tens of years, including DDT and lindane, which is a carcinogenic agent. The waste was stored with no protective measures in old workings leftover from sand extraction activity in the Wąwolnica stream valley. Leaching from the waste storage areas results in the direct contamination of soil as well as surface and ground water.

During the workshops, the assembled experts discussed the issue of how to effectively solve the problem of environmental time bombs, such as the waste storage grounds in Jaworzno, as well as the continued action of the lindane task group.

LINDANET – European Network of Lindane waste affected regions working together towards a greener environment – is a project aiming to improve the condition of the environment by influencing policies in areas contaminated by lindane (HCH). The project is carried out as part of the Interreg Europe program by 6 partners representing 5 countries: Spain, Germany, Czechia, Italy and Poland.
