Volcano eruption in the Pacific registered by GIG's geophysical stations

A major submarine volcano eruption occurred on 15.01.2022 in the Pacific, in the area of the Tonga archipelago. The event was registered by the sensors of the tidal gravimeters in Katowice and Rybnik, which are a part of the Upper Silesian Geophysical Observation System (GSOG), and by the seismological stations of the Upper Silesian Seismological Network (GRSS) at the Department of Geology, Geophysics and Surface Protection.

The seismic waves provoked by the eruption and propagating in the lithosphere reached the station at GIG (Katowice) after about 15 minutes and resulted in rock mass movements with an amplitude of about 1.5 micrometres. Meanwhile the air wave propagating in the atmosphere reached the station after some 15 hours and had an amplitude of about 1.5 hPa.
