The first meeting of the Regional Stakeholder Committee of the STRATEGY CCUS project, presided over by prof. Krzysztof Stańczyk of the Central Mining Institute in Katowice, was held on October 20, 2020. Due to the circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 epidemic, the meeting was convened online.
Independent experts and representatives of academic circles, industry and administration from the following institutions participated in the Regional Stakeholder Committee: The Polish Geological Institute, the Institute for Chemical Processing of Coal, the Regional Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, the University of Silesia, Park Naukowo-Technologiczny Euro-Centrum Sp. z o.o., the BoMiasto association, Węglokoks Energia Sp. z o.o., Tauron Wytwarzanie S.A., PKN Orlen S.A., The Marshal’s Office of the Silesian Voivodeship.
The goal of the meeting was to present information on the STRATEGY CCUS project, establish cooperation between stakeholders representing various sectors, and form a multidisciplinary team of experts whose task will be to analyse the challenges and opportunities related to the development of the CCUS technology in the area of Upper Silesia. The purpose of the conducted discussion was to help identify the factors that may stimulate the development of the CCUS technology in the region, and to determine the obstacles to the technology. The meeting allowed the stakeholders to voice their opinions, expectations, concerns and needs regarding the CCUS policy.
The workshops of the Regional Stakeholder Committee of the STRATEGY CCUS project were the first in a series of three planned during the accomplishment of the project.
STRATEGY CCUS: Strategic planning of regions and territories in Europe for low-carbon energy and industry through CCUS support and coordination, managed by the French Geological Survey (BRGM). There are 17 scientific and industrial partners from 10 European countries (France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Croatia, the United Kingdom, Romania, Poland, Germany, Norway) involved in the project. STRATEGY CCUS has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 837754.
