The EUMINDA project kick-off meeting

The EUMINDA project kick-off meeting took place in Katowice on 10–12 June 2025. The project is implemented under the Interreg Europe programme and brings together 12 partners from 9 European countries. Its main objective is to improve public policy instruments supporting the economic development of areas affected by mining activities.

The event was attended by 35 participants, including representatives of public administration, research institutions, and experts from post-mining regions. On the first day, participants became acquainted with the industrial heritage of Katowice. On the second day, they visited the “Ignacy” Historic Mine in Rybnik, where presentations and a regional debate took place. During this session, partners from the Silesian region – representatives of the Marshal's Office of the Silesian Voivodeship, the Central Mining Institute – National Research Institute (GIG-PIB), and the “Ignacy” Historic Mine – showcased good practices in the reuse of post-mining areas and projects supporting the socio-economic development of the Silesian Voivodeship.

On the third day of the meeting, project partners gathered at the GIG-PIB headquarters in Katowice, where they discussed the key thematic aspects of the project, including the work plan, methodology for the status quo analysis, and the communication strategy. During the meeting, the project’s guiding slogan was officially adopted:

Recognize the past. Repair the damage. Reimagine the future.

The EUMINDA project will be implemented from 2025 to 2029, focusing on three main challenge areas related to mining heritage: legal aspects, socio-economic issues, and sustainable development. The project has a total budget of over €2.29 million, co-financed by the EU.

Its overall aim is to develop policies that foster a just transition in Europe’s post-mining regions.

Additionally, it has two specific objectives:

  1. Improve institutional frameworks for dealing with long-term MDLs on societies and the environment through capacity building of relevant organisations and decision-making bodies and targeted practices and tools supporting policy development and implementation.
  2. Ensuring appropriate levels of citizen and stakeholder involvement in both the mining damage claims settlement process and in the public support for mining-related interventions serving either phasing out or continuing mining activities or sustainable use of mining facilities.

As a result, the project will develop 8 policy instruments in selected regions, which are at various stages of the mining lifecycle and possess complementary resources.
