Second CLD Workshop within SMARTER Project

On 15 April 2026, the second CLD workshop of the SMARTER project took place in Gdańsk, focusing on further developing participants’ understanding of systems thinking and the use of Causal Loop Diagrams (CLD). The workshop represented the next step in the collaborative analysis of challenges related to resident participation in the development of blue-green infrastructure (BGI).

During the session, participants explored the factors that influence collaboration with residents, their level of engagement, trust in public institutions, and satisfaction with participatory processes. Particular attention was given to identifying elements that strengthen residents’ sense of agency and support the acceptance of nature-based solutions.

In the practical part of the workshop, representatives of local government, academia, and civil society organisations examined the interconnections between different system variables. Using CLD we analysed both the direct and indirect effects of actions and interventions, as well as potential risks associated with their implementation.

The workshop contributed to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms shaping public participation and further advanced the development of a systemic model of relationships. The insights generated during the session will support the creation of a comprehensive representation of the system influencing the development of blue-green infrastructure.

SMARTER project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement N° 101212794.
