The project entitled “Postmining Information Model and Digital Twin”, acronym PALADIN, aims to develop a common framework for the digital management of information on post-mining sites. These solutions will support hazard assessment, land reuse planning and the transition of European coal regions.
The consortium comprises eight organisations from five countries:
- VUHU a.s. (VUHU), Czech Republic – project coordinator;
- Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg (TU BAF), Germany;
- Ethnicon Metsovion Polytechnion – National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece;
- SYSTRA Subterra Ingeniería S.L.U. (SYSTRA), Spain;
- Central Mining Institute – National Research Institute (GIG-PIB), Poland;
- “Poltegor-Instytut” Institute of Opencast Mining (POLT), Poland;
- Polska Grupa Górnicza S.A. (PGG), Poland;
- Fundación Santa Bárbara (FSB), Spain.
Post-mining sites comprise interconnected surface and underground features whose condition may change after mining has ceased. Fragmented archival documentation, spatial data and monitoring records hinder the identification of hazards, including subsidence, changes in groundwater levels and contamination, and limit opportunities for the safe redevelopment of these areas. There is no common approach to organising and exchanging information among companies, public authorities, designers and research institutions.
PALADIN will adapt Building Information Modelling (BIM) principles to post-mining environments. Postmining Information Modelling (PIM) will link the geometry of site features with geological, geotechnical, hydrological and environmental data. The PIMS standard will define object classifications, metadata structures, levels of detail and information management principles. PIM will be extended into a digital twin, updated with monitoring data and used for predictive analysis and scenario simulation.
The project objectives include:
- Developing and validating a PIM methodology and a common PIMS standard for surface and underground post-mining features.
- Ensuring data and model interoperability through openBIM principles, IFC and COBie formats, and integration with GIS systems and the requirements of the INSPIRE Directive.
- Developing and validating a digital twin integrating Internet of Things (IoT) data, field measurements and hazard modelling, including AI-assisted analysis.
- Preparing a roadmap for PIMS implementation and the PALADIN Guide for public authorities, planners, engineers and organisations responsible for managing post-mining sites.
